"Turn no man's land... into real man's land."So goes the recruitment ad/debut trailer for"Trenched,"the latest game from Double Fine, revealed this week at the 2011 Game Developer's Conference in San Francisco, Cali. It appears to be a customizable mech fighting game from the mind of Tim Schafer.

Sold.

There's not much to say right now, as thegame's official websitefeatures only the video and a handful of screenshots. It was announced last night at the tail end of the Game Developer's Choice Awards with an announcement trailer that Schafer called"extremely, extremely manly.""Trenched"will be published by Microsoft Game Studios as an Xbox Live Arcade release.

Double Fine of course developed"Psychonauts,"the amazing and highly under-purchased psychic summer camp adventure game from 2005. The studio stumbled a bit with its follow-up"Brutal Legend"in 2009, but now seems to have found its footing with a series of solid downloadable releases.

"Costume Quest"came last year, followed in February 2011 by the puzzle/adventure"Stacking."Both are marked by the same level of clever writing and whimsical characters that highlight the studio's previous efforts. Also coming up in addition to"Trenched"is"Sesame Street: Once Upon a Monster,"a Kinect game based on the popular children's television series.

The"Trenched"trailer certainly captures the same sense of wry humor that Double Fine is known for. The game itself looks like it offers some exciting mech action, though hopefully it will feature a simpler control scheme than you normally see in that type of offering. Given the pedigree of the developer and the apparent scope of the game -- check out the many different customization variations in the trailer -- this one seems very likely for a 2011 Summer of Arcade release.
