"Elder Scrolls"is not a series that is known for its multiplayer. No, that's not exactly accurate."Elder Scrolls"flat-outdoesn't havemultiplayer. People continue to ask for it though, because playing games online with friends is fun! In a new interview,"The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim"director Todd Howard discusses exactly why, despite fan requests, time and again the decision is made to skip multiplayer in favor of other features.

"The two most requested features we get are dragons and multiplayer. We got one of them this time,"he said in an interview withIGN."We always look into multiplayer, put lots of ideas on the whiteboard and it always loses. It's not that we don't like it. I can think of ways it would be a lot of fun."

Ultimately, assigning portions of the development team to work on a multiplayer component would just be too much of a drain on the available resources. Every"Elder Scrolls"game is MASSIVE. Think of"Borderlands"for a moment, a similarly large RPG-style game played from a first-person perspective and featuring multiplayer components. That world is not nearly as detailed as an"Elder Scrolls"game is, and still it needs to be broken up into discrete areas separated by load screens.

Do you really want that in your"Elder Scrolls"game? It's not to say the dev team couldn't work around such an obstacle, but it would undoubtedly take a considerable amount of effort, which could in turn detract from the rest of the game's features and functionality.

Howard also said that the new game's map is roughly the same size, geographically as the one in"Oblivion,"though it will feel a little bit different to players."Things like mountains change how that geography feels, and the time it takes you to get to and from places. It has a different flow when exploring."
